Motorcycle rental terms
Insurance excess
A £500 insurance excess applies in the event of any damage or loss to the hired motorcycle. You are responsible for this amount in the event of an accident or damage, regardless of fault.
Minor damage policy
Any minor damage to the motorcycle (e.g. scratches, dents, or scuffs) will be charged at RoadRider's discretion, based on the extent and nature of the damage. Repeated issues, such as dropping the bike, will result in the immediate termination of the hire agreement without refund.
Responsibility for fines and legal violations
Any speeding fines, parking fines, or other traffic law violations incurred while the motorcycle is in your possession are your full responsibility, including any associated costs and penalties. RoadRider School of Motorcycling is not liable for any fines or penalties that occur during the hire period.
Prosecution of underage riders
Under the UK Traffic Act, students under the age of 18 are not exempt from prosecution. Any legal violations or offences will be treated according to the full extent of the law, and RoadRider School of Motorcycling holds no liability for any fines, penalties, or legal consequences incurred.
Legal right to ride
By signing below, you confirm that you hold a valid driving licence that permits you to operate a motorcycle on public roads, and that you are not currently banned, disqualified, or otherwise restricted from riding. Any misrepresentation of this status will be considered a breach of this agreement and may result in immediate termination of the hire agreement.
Safety, conduct, and attitude
- Helmet and safety gear: it is mandatory to wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear at all times while operating the motorcycle, including minimum footwear of walking boots that cover the ankle — trainers and anything leaving your ankle exposed aren't acceptable. Denim jeans with no rips are required; nylon or stretch-fit style trousers are not acceptable. Failure to meet this standard may void your insurance, result in additional penalties, or mean we have to turn you away on the day without a refund.
- Eyesight and licence checks: every session starts with an eyesight check and a review of your licence — both are DVSA requirements we can't waive. If you don't meet the eyesight standard, or arrive without a valid licence, training can't go ahead and the session ends there with no refund, as the instructor's time and the bike booking are committed regardless.
- Traffic laws: adherence to all traffic laws and regulations is required. Reckless or unsafe riding will result in immediate termination of the hire agreement without refund.
- Alcohol and drugs: operating a motorcycle under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited and will result in immediate termination of this agreement without refund.
- Mental attitude and behaviour: safe motorcycle operation requires a responsible, calm, and focused mindset. Any behaviour demonstrating aggression, heightened anxiety, or emotional distress that may pose a risk to yourself or others will result in immediate termination of the hire agreement at RoadRider's discretion, without refund.
Test fees and being presented for test
Your course fee includes the DVSA Module 1 and Module 2 test fees for the tests booked as part of it. If a test needs to be booked again — after an unsuccessful attempt, a late cancellation, or a missed appointment — that test fee is payable again, along with any training time needed before the retest.
We'll only put you forward for a test once you're riding to test standard. That isn't us being difficult: presenting a rider who isn't ready costs you the test fee and achieves nothing. If you need more time to get there, additional training days can be added at our standard day rate.
Tests cancelled by the DVSA
Occasionally the DVSA cancels a test at short notice — examiner sickness being the usual reason. That's outside our control and, frustratingly, outside yours too. Where the DVSA cancels with less than three full working days' notice, you can claim your expenses back from them, including up to four hours of training with us at our standard hourly rate. We'll provide the signed receipt you need for the claim.
Claims must be made within six months of the cancelled test date. For motorcycle tests the claim is made on a downloadable form rather than online: claim expenses if DVSA cancelled your test.
Tests cancelled because of the weather
If the DVSA calls a test off due to weather, they'll refund the test fee itself. Be aware, though, that weather cancellations are specifically excluded from the DVSA's expenses scheme above — so nothing else is recoverable from them.
Our instructor's time and the motorcycle were still committed to your booking for that day, so those costs remain payable. We'll always do what we can to make the day useful — usually by turning it into training time rather than writing it off.
Making sure the motorcycle suits you
It's your responsibility to be satisfied that the motorcycle you're training on is one you can manage safely and comfortably — reaching the ground well enough to hold it steady, handling its weight at low speed and when stationary, and reaching and operating all the controls.
We only run one bike per category, so if it doesn't suit you there isn't a smaller alternative we can swap to. If you have any doubt at all, contact us before your course and we'll arrange a time for you to come and sit on the bike — there's no charge for that, and it takes a few minutes. Arriving on the day without having checked, and finding the bike doesn't fit, means the day is lost and the course fee isn't refundable.
Non-refundable training and tests
Course fees, including test fees paid on your behalf, are non-refundable. If you decide to finish your training elsewhere, or present yourself for a test independently, no refund is given for unused training days or unused test fees.
Liability waiver
By signing below, you acknowledge and accept that motorcycle riding carries inherent risks, and that RoadRider School of Motorcycling is not liable for any injuries or damages sustained as a result of your participation in this rental agreement. You also confirm that you have the appropriate level of skill and experience to safely operate the rented motorcycle.
All fields are required, including your signature, before this agreement can be submitted.
